Flowers, plants and rocks, oh my! Internationally acclaimed Landscape Designer(and famed local horticulturist), Melissa Larsen, has created new flower beds for the Spring Creek Ranch House. Beautiful river boulders now edge these new beds adding vertical interest (I was listening!), texture, and dimension!

With the Ranch House freshly painted and restored to its original colors, and these new landscaping additions we are really ready for wedding season. Thank you Melissa and Co.
Wedding #2 this weekend…I’ll post some pictures from last weekend’s wedding here soon.

Today felt like the first day of summer. The balsam root has come and gone and we just had our first wedding of the season. Congratulations to Svea and Andy! Their ceremony was beautiful and their vows to each other and to Anja left nary a dry eye in the audience.

Warm Days

The weekend was spent mostly working outside.  Daren, Bud and Ayla spent most of Saturday picking rocks out of the alfalfa fields at Spring Creek.  I helped out for a bit, but had to tend to the baby.  While they were rock picking, Ayla and Daren found a Kill Deer nest.  The eggs are so beautiful, I had to go back on Sunday and take a picture.
We managed to take our first family walk around Spring Creek this spring and say tons of wildlife.  Mergansers, Mallards, Osprey, Blue Herons, and Bald Eagles are everywhere! Oh, and the ground hogs are back wrecking havoc on the fields and getting fat off of our crop.

Spring Creek Ranch, Winthrop WA

Greetings from Spring Creek Ranch, in Winthrop, Washington.  It is April 10th and most of the snow in the valley bottom has melted off.  The winter ski season, as pictured above in front of our cabin, seems far away.  Spring continues to tempt us with occasional warm days, bringing temperatures well into the 60’s.  But then again it seems to rain or snow every week still.  The longer days have brought the wildlife back.  Our Osprey pair, who hatched out their young on our property last year are back and we are hoping that they win their nesting spot back from the bald eagles who have become pretty aggressive.

New at the ranch.  Daren just finished smoothing out the yard after some maintenance repairs and planted new grass.  The garlic that we planted last fall is starting to come up and the crocuses and day lilies are making their annual appearance.

Our daughter Ayla is happy to have the snow gone.  She spent the winter begging us to go skiing each day, but now that the air is soft and warm she would rather spend her time jumping on our trampoline and gathering eggs from our chickens.  The four hens that wintered over are doing well, even though we are only getting 2 eggs a day. Curious, the rooster has become a bit more aggressive over the winter.  We chose to keep him out of the other 9 roosters that ended up in rooster soup because he seemed so gentle and curious.  Ahh, his demeanor seems to have changed with the weather and he goes after Ayla every time she goes in the pen.

Next big event at Spring Creek is the house painting.  Stay tuned.
